Introducing CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is a strain extracted from hemp (a type of Cannabis plant) which is being increasingly used across various marketplaces from food & drink to health & beauty.

But before you think the world has gone mad, it's important you know the facts.

Although Cannabis oil has been used since the 1940s, over the past few years CBD has been used numerous times in the medical industry (despite the stigma attached to it). With the introduction in the medical profession and the noticeable effects it had on patients, CBD has started to grow a following within the public eye, encouraging countries to legalise the use of CBD in commercial products.

The 2 main strains in Cannabis consist of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD. The difference between the two is vastly different with THC containing properties with hallucinogenic effects, whereas CBD contains properties which are not only used as a sedative but also has a lot of other health benefits.

The Stats Don’t Lie

From the bare necessities like water to even skincare products, CBD can be used in almost every product in a range of marketplaces. Although not proven yet, many believe CBD improves mental wellbeing as well as physical pain and can even help with diseases including Cancer.

According to research, 27.5% of Americans have used CBD in 2019. That’s 1 in every 4 people! So, it’s no wonder why the CBD market is predicted to rise to £1.68 billion by 2023 from £358.78 million in 2018.

Common CBD Misconceptions

As CBD has only just been introduced into mainstream society and the effects are still not clear, there are a lot of theories and misconceptions surrounding CBD. Here are some of the most common misconceptions:

“CBD is good and THC is bad” – Unfortunately, it’s not as black and white as it seems. Although THC does contain hallucinogenic properties, THC actually has some amazing health benefits, but, due to its hallucinogenic nature, the laws on THC are still strict.

“CBD can only be smoked” – CBD can be administered in many ways which have been hugely utilised in such products as ingestible supplements, hair products & even in skincare.

“CBD is for sick people” – While CBD had shown its benefits for physical diseases and conditions, people are also using the compound to improve their mental wellbeing and combat common disorders such as anxiety and depression.

“CBD is addictive” - Unlike THC, the CBD strain does not contain any properties that would cause it to be additive to a consumer.

“CBD hasn’t been scientifically proven” – Due to the lack of high-quality research, CBD is yet to have the necessary attention and research it needs to prove its physical and mental benefits, although there have been indications that scientists do believe CBD can have a positive effect and may be used more in the future.

Law on CBD

The law and regulation on the commercial use of CBD has changed in the UK. If you’re considering the idea of manufacturing a product containing CBD, here are a few things you need to know:

• Besides the flower, CBD is legal in the UK so long as it does not contain any traces of other substances.

• Companies selling products containing CBD cannot advertise any medical claims related to Cannabidiol in their products.

• It remains illegal to grow your own hemp without the valid home office licence and can only be grown for industrial use.

• As of the 31st of March 2021, ingestible CBD products must go through an approval process before selling.

Our CBD Clients

For Rawlings, the growth of the CBD market has been noticeable. We have developed standout packaging for CBD clients across all market sectors, including skincare, beer, water and supplements. Here are two of our most recent projects.

One of our most interesting ventures was CBD water by Common Water. Common Water uses their “patented water-soluble hemp extract containing CBD which is absorbed by the body alongside carefully selected B vitamins to help support normal psychological function.”

Paired with our 330ml soft drinks bottle with a 1 colour print, 75% opacity Pantone blue spray, and a refreshing brand identity, we believe Common Water is one of our most unique clients.

It’s not just Common Water though, some of our clients like AVER London who specialise in CBD oil are also tapping into the market using our 30ml dropper bottles finished with a matte spray and silkscreen print to help their product look visually striking. And it doesn’t stop there, we also designed their cartons to go with it to knock the socks off their customers.

AVER London “combines science with the latest functional remedies to create the perfect blend of products to return your mind and body to a state of balance.”

Since then, AVER London have developed their own CBD beverage achieving amazing reviews and mentions by such brands as Vogue and GQ. We could not be any happier to see the continued success of AVER London and be a part of their journey.

You’ve seen how our clients have succeeded, why not take the next step into the CBD market?
