In a competitive marketplace, it’s critical that you and your product can stand out from the crowd. Being the first thing a customer spots on a shelf has always been important, but, with more elaborative designs and techniques than ever, this has become a tricky sticking point for most brands.
The harsh truth is that even with a superb product, if the prospective buyer doesn't notice it, they won’t buy it. Which can explain why we’ve seen product design at the forefront for many of our clients.
Discover how various industries from food & drink to health & beauty have made a statement in their marketplace by using bold marketing ploys, creative designs, and innovative products.
Despite the name, Guerrilla marketing has nothing to do with herbivorous apes, it’s much more intriguing than that.
Guerrilla marketing is a low-cost advertising technique, used predominantly by SME’s to engage with customers by doing something unconventional or unique to build brand awareness.
But why, what’s the benefit? Guerrilla Marketing is a perfect opportunity to build memorable and meaningful relationships with customers outside traditional means with interactive and engaging content.
If you’re still not convinced, one of our clients, Mother’s Ruin 1751 is a prime example of this. Mother’s Ruin 1751, founded in 2018, are massive Gin enthusiasts based in Cornwall, home to their very-own Cornish Blue – Flamingo Gin.
In 2019, they decided to plan an outlandish, yet memorable, event called Gin’s & Fin’s. This event involved redecorating the whole interior of the Plymouth Aquarium, dressing athletes in mermaid costumes and putting them in fish tanks, all whilst being accompanied by a fantastic atmosphere and (most importantly) amazing drinks. As you’d expect Gin’s & Fin’s drove thousands of people to the event thus attracting the media to the scene.
Off the success of this, Mother’s Ruin 1751 were inspired to produce their very own gin called Cornish Blue – Flamingo Gin. The striking vibrancy of the blue sprayed, 70cl Titus spirit bottle, and a striking overlay spray portraying a flamingo’s feathers from a birds-eye view (designed by our very own graphic designer), is a great contender to compete with supermarket shelf space.
And even though Cornish Blue was only introduced at the tail-end of 2020, their 1st batch of Gin sold out on the 1st day of release. We are proud to have partnered with Mother’s Ruin to support their packaging efforts and the future looks bright as proved by winning South West England Prestige Award (2020/21)for Gin Distiller of the Year and a new Gin line being released by the end of this year!
Although Guerrilla Marketing is a great talking point, that’s not the only way to create a standout product. In fact, one of the biggest factors for customers is how the product looks. As we are visual creatures, a product that looks aesthetically pleasing is essential for any brand. One of the best ways to achieve this is to design the packaging using a graphic designer so that your product appeals to your audience, incorporates your core values, and, most importantly, looks great!
One of our clients, Harrogate Candle Company, is an internationally recognised, sought-after brand specialising in various aromatherapy products including their luxury candles. After only establishing in 2012, Harrogate has made an impact in the market with such extravagant aromatherapy lines as their seasonal collection. Within this range include a pairing of uniquely compatible fragrances, including our favourite Orange & Cinnamon.
“The sweet, juicy scent of orange and the soothing and calming properties of Cinnamon and Clove create a happy feeling of contentment and relaxation.” Which it’s no reason why this product has 5-star reviews across the board.
This rich and intensifying fragrance is sold in various sized candle glass, with bold white spray paired with their distinctive branding, sets a real impression from the get-go.
And after all of that, there’s more nearing the horizon with Harrogate edging closer to releasing their brand-new range of products anytime soon!
Our final example of a bold design we’ve fulfilled is for Bermondsey Mixer Co.. BMCo. is an all-natural tonic producer based in London, who have found themselves featured in many articles from The BBC, to The Daily Mail for their renowned, flavoursome tonics.
The product, Bermondsey Tonic Syrup, was designed alongside BMCo. and their design agency (She Was Only) to make this visually-stunning product. Bermondsey Tonic Syrup allows customers to make tonic water to their desired strength using carbonated water and can also be used in cocktails to “impart a daring kick of cinchona bark bitterness.” Unlike most tonic syrups, Bermondsey Tonic Syrup is contained in our 480ml amber Boston round glass bottle, typically used for aromatherapy products. However, with a distinctive spray fade and a simplistic prominent name, we think this product is something that won’t go amiss.
If you're looking to accomplish a premium look, the best route is through a bespoke, tailor-made glass bottle/jar. Whether it’s embossment or something unlike any other, creating your own bespoke product is a great way to mark your name in the industry. Not to mention, creating a more well-rounded and luxurious product that appeals to your target market. And even if bespoke isn’t on your radar, choosing an alternative to your standard glass product or a product typically associated with a different marketplace (similarly to Bermondsey Mixer Co.) is the next best thing from bespoke.
